Def Jam Wanted YG To Work With DJ Premier Instead of DJ Mustard

YG
Def Jam hasn’t always fully believed in YG. He was signed to the label in 2009, shortly after ‘Toot It & Boot It,’ but didn’t release his debut album until 2013. So YG used the streets and the mixtape game to build up his buzz until his undeniable single, ‘My Nigga,’ came out.
Even though Def Jam didn’t always give YG the attention he gets now, they definitely threw out suggestions. One of them? Less DJ Mustard and more DJ Premier. YG’s A&R Sickamore revealed this tidbit ItsTheReal’s podcast:
“Well at first it was like, ‘Well you know, he’s doing too much work with DJ Mustard. We should get him in with DJ Premier or something.’ That was a real thing. I was just like, you want me to just leave the hottest producer to go with Premo? I kind of blacked in the meeting. I went too hard.”
Can we still get a YG and DJ Premier collaboration, though? Maybe on Still Krazy?
