‘Game Of Thrones’: HBO In Talks For Seasons 7 & 8 Pickup

While one Game of Thrones cliffhanger — what happened to Jon Snow — will not be resolved until the hugely popular HBO series returns for a sixth season April 24, another big question — will there be more seasons — may be answered sooner. HBO is in renewal discussions for the show with the series’ creators/executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss, HBO president Michael Lombardo confirmed at TCA. Like was the case two years ago, when GOT was picked up for Seasons 5 and 6, I hear the idea again is to do a two-season order, for Seasons 7 and 8. Multi-year pickups are reserved only for the biggest shows, like The Big Bang Theory, and GOT certainly fits that bill.
As for whether this will be the GOT‘s final chapter, that has not been determined yet. “David and Dan are feeling there’s probably two more years after Season 6, that’s what we’re looking at right now,” Lombardo said back in July. “We hope that they would change their mind, but that’s how they are feeling now.”
GOT is coming of an incredible high. In addition to breaking another ratings record 8.11 million Live + same day viewers for the Season 5 finale, the series also broke Emmy record for most wins in a single year, 12, including best drama series.
Season 6 of GOT will start its run before author George RR Martin, a co-executive producer on the show, has published the next book in the series.
